A different path to Veterinary Practice in Australia

My journey is a bit different from Natalia’s path to becoming a full-time GP vet in Sydney.

Why Externships Are Important

An externship is a short-term, hands-on experience where you observe, assist, and show your skills before committing.

  • I recommend doing an externship before committing to an internship, not just to get chosen, but to choose the right place for the next year or more.

  • Outcome: After a 2-week externship, I applied to the internship and I’ve got the position.

Equine Practice vs. Small Animal Practice: Pay and Work-Life Balance

  • Equine practice is always under paid compared to small animals. During my internship, I was paid 60K/year, including share accommodation nearby the clinic.

  • If that’s the career you want to pursue, you know you can eventually earn 80-100K/year after completing an internship.

  • Depending on the place and state you work, you can earn up to 150K/year.

  • It’s worth mentioning that in equine jobs, depending on the area you work in, sometimes they can offer a package that includes a car and accommodation. For example, if you work on a breeding farm, they tend to offer accommodation on the farm, a car for work and personal use, but you usually work 12 days a fortnight, essentially because you work every second weekend in exchange for accommodation.

  • Other clinics have recently started offering paid or bonus compensation when you’re on call.

Work-Life Balance in Equine Practice

  • Work-life balance differences: The work-life balance in equine practice can be more demanding compared to small animal practice, but if this is your passion, it’s worth it.

  • Australia as a great place to practice: If equine practice is what you want to do, Australia is an excellent country to pursue it.
