Less Survivable Cancers on Tuesday, 6th January 2026 at 9.30am

Less survivable cancers: brain, lung, liver, oesophageal, pancreatic, and stomach, are profoundly impacted by workforce shortages. These cancers represent 20% of cases but account for 42% of cancer deaths, with a five-year survival rate of only 16%, in stark contrast to 55% for more survivable cancers. A comprehensive national cancer plan must include a targeted strategy specifically for these aggressive cancers.

Westminster Hall debate on brain cancer and tissue freezing—Wednesday, 7th January at 9:30am

Freezing tissue at the time of cancer removal safeguards vital DNA and RNA, enabling better diagnostics, personalised therapies, and advancing research. Without this step, many promising options are just out of reach for patients.

Currently, access to tissue freezing varies across the NHS, creating a postcode lottery driven by location rather than medical need. Simple funding and training could make it standard practice in most trusts. Experts agree that expanding tissue freezing would boost patient care and UK research.

I am also concerned that families often struggle to access tissue for further testing or genetic analysis later on, missing the chance to freeze tissue initially feels unfair and avoidable.

Attending these debates and sharing your insights demonstrates your dedication to addressing these urgent health concerns affecting your constituents. I understand your busy schedule, but these issues affect many families across the constituency.
