This week in Writing the Heart, we’re diving into Glennon Doyle’s Love Warrior—a memoir I deeply admire for its utter lack of fear. Doyle has become such a defining voice in memoir because she never flinches. She goes right into the raw, uncomfortable stuff: addiction, marriage, betrayal, faith, desire, and that long, quiet trek toward learning to trust your own gut. It’s no surprise the book hit #1 on the New York Times bestseller list and picked up Oprah’s endorsement along the way.
In today’s video, I’m sharing a reading from a stunning passage near the end of the book. Glennon has snuck away to a beach hotel, completely on her own, trying to find ground while everything around her falls apart. As she sits by the water, something shifts—and for a brief moment, the heavy walls around her separate self just fall away.
It’s a gorgeous reflection on solitude, surrender, and the strange magic that happens when we get quiet enough to feel connected to something bigger. Afterward, I’ll share a few writing prompts inspired by her piece—along with a gentle invitation to follow them wherever they lead you.
