A few days after my birthday I realized that I’m a completely different person than I was a year ago, never mind ten years ago. Many of my opinions have changed. My taste has changed. My interests, ambitions, and motives have changed. This is probably normal, but it struck me as being important. Here’s some of what I’ve noticed.
IT’S POSSIBLE TO HIT A WALL, TO RUN OUT OF GAS
The dangerously dim-witted president of the United States believes physical exercise is useless—if not dangerous—because human beings are like batteries, born with a finite amount of energy, which Pilates or jogging would unnecessarily deplete. Sounds stupid, right? U.G. Krishnamurti—reluctant guru and definite non-fascist—held similar beliefs. He scorned doctors and medications, ate mostly salt and cream, and in his eighties, when asked about his unusually youthful appearance, said “It’s because I don’t eat healthy food, I don’t take vitamins, and I don’t exercise.”
