When you start out as a writer, people usually tell you to read. And they tell you to write. (Not bad advice!)
If you’re lucky, they teach you how to revise a sentence, build a scene, or sharpen dialogue.
Obviously all of that matters.
But writing the book, while central, is only part of it.
The rest—the larger, stranger curriculum—is mostly invisible.
