Greetings mortals! Lord Devereaux the Devourer here. I have been greatly enjoying your stories and poems this month. The flavors are…exquisite. However, time marches onward, and as such, another week of the Smogust’s Story Hoard challenge begins!
Now that Smog and I have settled our differences, I look forward to a grand creative feast as we begin week 3 of the challenge. I have been getting odd letters from someone claiming to be the dragon’s mother, but I’m sure that is nothing is consequence.

Today’s prompt is outside of D’veen, and it takes us back to horror with a gothic twist, starring a badass witch. You may choose to write your story or poem based on the art alone, or I’ve also prepared an optional text prompt below to help you get started:
Optional text prompt: A witch prepares a spell that will be her masterpiece. It requires careful preparation and strange ingredients, including the blood of a dragon, given willingly.
Write a story or poem about how this witch convinces a dragon to part with a vial of its blood so her spell can finally be cast.

This piece showcases what is known as an Aluthian Vault. In one of my stories, “The Sunken Citadel” we catch a glimpse of a very special one, but in general, these are essentially underwater domes that contain the secrets of the gods who fashioned the realm.
So, what happens when a dragon find themselves trapped within one? What if it’s all they’ve ever known? Nothing but the sea above them, and maybe some fish or sharks swimming by, but little else?
As always, you may simply write something inspired by the art, but here’s a little more of a traditional writing prompt to get you started if you’d like:
Optional text prompt: The Endarian Expanse is an ocean surrounding the continent of D’veen. In its depths, locked in glass vaults, lie ancient treasure and the secrets of the gods.
Write a story or poem about a dragon who has grown up inside one of these vaults, longing to one day escape to the realm beyond those curved walls.

Today’s piece is titled “The Fisherman’s Friend.” It is not set in D’veen, but as you can see, it features a dragon and their unlikely friend. You may choose to write your story based on the art alone, or you can check out the optional text prompt below.
Optional text prompt: A fisherman and a dragon are an unlikely combination, and yet, these two souls have found each other. The dragon soars above the waves, shepherding the fish into their friend’s net. It’s a friendship born of happenstance, and a bond that cannot be easily broken.
Write a story or poem about the day when the fisherman arrives with a bold plan to catch a legendary fish said to swim just off the shore.
