Bradley Ramsey, The Circus Dragon · The Writer's Journey

Greetings, one and all! Lord Devereaux here, eager to begin a new writing challenge. This month, we are working to convince the dragon Smog to relocate anywhere but the cavernous depths beneath my home.

For this to occur, we must tempt him with a hoard of stories beyond equal. To help faciltate this, Bradley has partnered with The Circus Dragon to provide brand- new art prompts that are sure to inspire.

And now, without further delay, let us begin week one of the challenge:

Genre: Adventure/Fantasy + Sci-fi

Word Count Limit: 3,000 words.

You may choose to use only the art to inspire your entry. If you would prefer a text prompt as well, you can find that below. Today’s prompt is set in D’veen, but do not fret about getting all the details right if you choose to write a story set in my realm.

If you’re curious to learn more about it, this thread may be helpful. Remember, the text prompt is here to help (and not all will be set in D’veen, of course). You can choose to ignore it entirely if you’d prefer.

Optional Text Prompt: A mysterious structure has risen out of the Endarian Expanse, the ocean surrounding the continent of D’veen. Dragons seem drawn to it for reasons unknown. Write a story or poem about an expedition to uncover the structure’s true purpose…

Optional Text Prompt: Write a story or poem about a child who gets lost in a fairy tale forest, only to discover a dragon who is lost as well. Together, they must find a way out and back home to their loved ones…

Genre: Fantasy + Grimdark

Word Count Max: 3,000

Your prompt today is two parts. In the first, we see a dragon and a dwarf. In the second, we see a description of the dragon’s cage.

You may choose to use this solely as your source of inspiration, but if you would also like to set your Day 4 entry in D’veen, your optional text prompt is below:

Optional Text Prompt: During the time of dwarves, D’veen was not a safe home to dragons. They were often captured and held in cages. Seen only as beasts, instead of intelligent, complex creatures.

Write a story or poem about a dwarf who takes pity on a caged dragon and decides to help them escape…

You may choose to write a story or poem inspired solely by the art above. If you’d like a text prompt as well to get you started, you can find that below:

Optional text prompt: The world outside is falling apart at the seams. The only safety for dragons and others is indoors, away from the chaos and destruction.

Write a story or poem about the world outside, and how the ones trapped inside are coping with the end of everything...

The next prompt will go live Monday, August 10th. In the meantime, all prior prompts remain open all month, so please feel free to go back or catch up as you would like!
