Welcome to the weekly Power up Prompt! These weekly prompts offer up a genre, a setting, a character, and a conflict for you to use in a story or poem however you’d like! Submissions that use all three elements also get a guaranteed shout out on The Saved as Draft Podcast!
Power up Prompts will show up every Sunday until the next big writing challenge. This week, our prompt is written by J.M. Gooding! Let’s dive in and discover your options for this week!
My vision for Power Up Prompts is to put the power in the hands of my fellow writers. Most prompts give you a single idea to run with, and those are great, but I’m always looking for ways to keep you on your toes.
So, these weekly prompts are going to have three separate parts that can fit together, but they can also work on their own. This will allow you to mix and match to your heart’s content and set the challenge accordingly!
Should you decide to participate, here’s how you can figure out which power level your story or poem falls into:
Level 1 = A story or poem that uses one of the three elements
Level 2 = A story or poem that uses two of the three elements
Level 3 = A story or poem that uses all three elements
This week’s genre is OPEN! Your story may fall into whatever genre you like. As you’ll soon find, the elements from our guest writer lend themselves well to a wide range of tones and settings.

You have until Friday, July 24th at midnight EST to submit your stories for a shout-out on the Saved as Draft Podcast. Please submit all of your entries on Scriptorum. I’ll have several links to the submission form in the post here, just look for the orange buttons.

Your setting this week is The First Moment. Whether it is a place beyond time, a forgotten archive, the instant before existence, the distant future where the truth has finally been uncovered, or something else entirely is yours to decide.
Somewhere in your story lies the answer to one of existence's oldest questions: How did everything begin?
Your character this week is The Witness. Perhaps they are a scientist chasing impossible evidence. Perhaps they are the last survivor who remembers what came before.
They might be a deity, an ordinary person caught in extraordinary circumstances, an artificial intelligence, an explorer, or someone who was never meant to learn the truth. Whatever form they take, they stand closer to the beginning than anyone else.
Your conflict this week is The Cost of Knowing. The truth about creation is not merely interesting, it changes everything. Perhaps revealing it would shatter civilizations, destroy faith, rewrite history, awaken something ancient, or force your character to sacrifice what they love most.
Perhaps the truth is so beautiful it hurts, or so horrifying that it cannot be allowed to spread. Your story should explore not only what the beginning was, but why discovering it matters.
