On Wednesday, Alphabet told investors it now plans to spend up to $205 billion this year on data centers and the chips inside them, nearly its previous four years of spending combined. By the next close the stock had fallen seven percent. Days earlier the chipmakers’ benchmark index had slid into a bear market, more than a fifth below a record set a month before. Everyone I know running serious capital is asking the same question: is this 1999 with better balance sheets? There are two honest answers. One says the largest companies on earth are walking into the biggest capital-allocation error since the fiber overbuild. The other says the market is grading this buildout against the wrong measuring stick, and the grading error is worth trillions. The difference comes down to a single number almost nobody is using.
