IBM had not warned ahead of a scheduled report since 2002. On July 14 it did — and the market delivered the worst single session in the company’s recorded trading history, roughly $68 billion of value erased, while memory, AI hardware, and cybersecurity equities rallied through the same tape. The dispersion in professional judgment is as instructive as the dispersion in price. Within days, one bank argued the franchise could be replicated at the same price with materially more earnings power, a second raised its target the same morning, and a third withdrew its bull case entirely. The chief executive maintains that artificial intelligence is not disrupting his software business; the market repriced the company by a quarter against that assurance, and the next two reporting cycles will decide which reading survives. Sitting in the July 14 tape, meanwhile, is a market-structure statistic without precedent in twenty-four years of data — one that neither the panic nor the reassurance can explain. The analysis that follows decomposes the event into the two competing mechanisms it exposed, traces the procurement record behind each, sets out the dated ninety-day calendar by which the question resolves, and renders a verdict.
