Our Christmas vacation started December 20, when we loaded up the car and drove to our son’s place. The trip was uneventful, which is only right and just, and we arrived at our son’s place unscathed.
The next day we saw Eileen Ivers’s Joyful Christmas show, which filled us right up with the Christmas spirit.
Our son and his fiancee had to work Monday and Tuesday, so we just enjoyed the peace and quiet. Oh, I did make a pan of peppermint bark for the upcoming family feast.
On Wednesday evening, we all took off to my sister’s place for the annual Christmas Eve family festival of jokes and rare roast beef. The kids were all taller, the dogs were all cuter, and we old folks were all just as happy as could be to be there with our kids, and their kids, and all the old stories.
On Thursday, we hollered Merry Christmas! and opened our presents and ate a delicious honey-baked ham dinner.
On Friday, Joe and I headed home earlier than we wanted because of an approaching winter storm. We prefer the Pennsylvania Turnpike to be dry and free of snow and ice. I know that’s rather unadventurous, but there it is. We beat the storm and even had time to buy some groceries.
So it was a great few days, especially when our son said that he never understood why people hated family events until he realized that he was part of a family that actually liked each other. That hit me with a punch of joy. I can’t think of any other way to put it. We like each other, we love each other, and that, my friends, is the best Christmas present ever. I am so grateful for that rare gift.
And the roast beef doesn’t hurt.
