Lindsay Graham was set to be on Meet the Press yesterday. God had other ideas.
I was set to be at the office by now. I walked in from working out with my dad, and heard a familiar voice.
“Daddy, where are you?”
It was 530 am.
Little Boy Kong was awake.
I went in.
“You left me alone in here”, he cried.
Remnants of what happened when God’s plan was to call his mother, my love, M, home.
We talked for a bit. He cried. Told me he loved me, and I protect him. The protect him part is new, probably another fallout from his mother being called home.
M and I were on facetime for about twenty minutes the night before she died. I don’t remember what we talked about. We had been living apart for a couple of weeks. Usually the first few days she would leave, we did not talk much. Then we’d text, various topics. Our son. Bosnian land inheritance issues. Instagram videos on raising Balkan children. Things would get better, we’d meet up, then me and LBK would move back in. It never lasted.
The night before she died, I tried calling her. She texted back she was fighting her demons, journaling for counseling, and was going to get right. For some reason, I decided to facetime her. We laughed, she saw our son playing. We made plans to get pizza the next day at our favorite place.
When I found her 36 hours later, her bags were packed to move back in.
There’s no rhyme or reason to God’s plans. At least to us. We are God’s children, the descendants of Adam. The receivers of Christ’s blessing and gift. I’d like to think we find out everything once we get to heaven, but who knows.
All we have is today. We should always make plans, always have something to look forward to. Lindsay had his Sunday schedule, M had a son and a fiancee to get pizza with. I had a long work day ahead of me, which has been shortened in a good way. I think.
Off to the jail I go. May you all start your Mondays with better things to look forward to.
