Welcome to the (very late) Feb 2021 edition of "collage art storytelling with tweets." about the technology industry’s reshuffling around the United States and the world post pandemic.
This episode chronicles the events of January 2021.
This guide in general will skew towards Miami (where I live currently) but also include Austin and Atlanta (where I also have lived and have knowledge of) among others.
For the previous episode checkout out The Tech Diaspora Acceleration so far 1-2021
Lead tweet:

The acceleration of remote has changed the world in more ways than people realize. Politicians must deliver results, or else an instant vote of no confidence is called as people emigrate out. More like a parliamentary system, except you choose between cities rather than parties.

Miami isn’t the next tech hub. It’s surrounded by a swamp. Construction costs are insane because of hurricane codes. Vacant land doesn’t exist. Property insurance has risen on average 20% per year for 5 years. Plus it’s hot AF. Ever been there in July?

Start remote. SFBA is over for startups: the cost of housing and rent gives you much worse operating leverage. Many talented people choose jobs they want to be flexible re: location. Remote is better at this time in the market. I wrote that before COVID, now it's extra true.

Remote means all mayors are now in competition with each other, whether they realize it or not. And Mayor Suarez is running away with the game. Like being the first politician to get the internet, he’s the first one to understand the remote economy.

This, but for Software Americans moving to Miami. It’s not enough to just move to Florida, like normal people have been doing for over a century. They have to tell a big story about it. The material change in conditions is secondary to winning some ideological battle. https://t.co/aXqfM18bFx

Romeen Sheth @RomeenSheth
Atlanta tech is RIPPING right now 🔥🔥🔥 In the last 6 months.... @Calendly valued at $3B @OneTrust valued at $5.1B @GreenlightCard valued at $1.2B @SalesLoft valued at $1.1B @KabbageInc (sold to @AmericanExpress) at $800M The '20s are about to be one hell of a decade for ATL.

The long overdue decentralization of technology. Away from a few expensive cities, towards the rest of the country and the people of the world. No need to “commit to the Bay”, it’s rich enough. Commit to the world.
