On May 21, we celebrated five years of independent programs, fellowships, awards, training, and publishing at our first-ever BCPH Gala. The event featured a dynamic program, including a live Health Justice Scholars Competition. Four finalists presented three-minute pitches that answered one question: What is today’s number one public health issue, and how would you solve it?

James Arthur, MPH, a Mental Health Therapist at Ballad Health’s Woodridge Hospital and a Clinical Mental Health Counseling candidate at East Tennessee State University, took first prize, naming mental health inequity as the public health issue of our time:
“We must stop treating mental health care as a luxury service and start treating it like infrastructure — the same way we invest in roads, clean water, or emergency response.”
Shriya Veluri and Nanditha Niranjan, MD/DrPH students at UT Health Houston School of Public Health, took second prize with a Prevention Budget Rule to move spending upstream — noting that every $1 in prevention can return roughly $14 in savings.
