BCPH Thought Fellow Josephina Lin will premiere her podcast, “Community Care: Community-Led Solutions for Mental Health Equity,” during tomorrow’s live webinar: Wednesday, June 17, 2026, at 2:00 PM EST.
In this conversation, Josephina speaks with Simone de Oliveira, a Community Health Worker, about how we can reimagine community-based mental health—expanding the behavioral health workforce and drawing on community health workers to bridge gaps in care for under-resourced communities. The discussion centers on adapting Problem Management Plus (PM+) in Boston, Massachusetts—an evidence-based intervention developed by the World Health Organization that trains non-clinical workers to deliver mental health skills.
Drawing on her experience implementing PM+ alongside Boston’s communities, Simone shares lessons on addressing stress, anxiety, and everyday challenges while building resilience and connection. Listeners will gain insight into community-centered approaches to mental health, the role of community health workers in advancing behavioral health equity, and how evidence-based interventions can be adapted to meet the needs and strengths of diverse communities.

When patients struggle to manage diabetes, they are often labeled “non-adherent”—but what if that label overlooks the larger systems shaping health outcomes? In this conversation, Dr. Acevedo, a Primary Care Clinical Pharmacist and Diabetes Care Specialist at Unity Health Care, is joined by Dr. Darlene Lawrence, a Family Medicine Physician, and Barbara Dominguez, a Family Nurse Practitioner—two longtime clinicians, educators, and community leaders in Washington, DC.
Drawing on their combined clinical and community-based experience, they explore how healthcare access, insurance barriers, medication affordability, prior authorization requirements, social determinants of health, and systemic inequities influence diabetes care and outcomes. Listeners will gain insight into how clinicians can challenge traditional narratives around “non-adherence,” how health systems can better support people living with chronic conditions, and what it looks like to move beyond blame toward more equitable, patient-centered, and systems-informed approaches to diabetes care.
