Hey ThriveCrafters,
We’re exactly one week from November, and if you’re selling handcrafted goods on Etsy or anywhere else, the next 60 days will make or break your year.
Here’s what most sellers get wrong: They think the holiday rush starts in December. It doesn’t. It starts right now.
This Week’s Priority: Inventory Decisions
Look at your sales data from last November and December. Which items actually sold versus what you thought would sell? This week, you need to make hard decisions about what to make more of and what to skip entirely.
Don’t waste precious crafting hours on items that didn’t move last year, no matter how much you love making them. Your time is your most valuable asset right now.
Shipping Cutoff Dates You Must Post NOW
Calculate your shipping deadlines for Christmas delivery and add them to every listing, your shop announcement, and your about section. Customers are already planning their holiday shopping, and clear deadlines build trust.
For US domestic shipping, your safe cutoff is typically December 15-18 for standard shipping. International orders? That deadline is closer than you think—many need to order by late November.
The Photography Refresh That Takes 30 Minutes
Holiday shoppers buy with their eyes first. Take 30 minutes this week to add seasonal context to your main product photos. This doesn’t mean full winter scenes—just simple touches like a cozy blanket in the background, warm lighting, or holiday colors in your staging.
One Etsy seller I know increased her conversion rate by 40% just by adding a simple pine branch to her flat lay photos. Small visual cues trigger “this is perfect for the holidays” in buyers’ minds.
If you’re planning to run any sales, decide on your strategy now. Black Friday through Cyber Monday (November 29-December 2) will be huge, but here’s the trap: Don’t discount so deeply that you devalue your handmade work.
Instead, consider these approaches:
Free shipping thresholds that increase average order value
Bundle deals that move inventory without slashing prices
Early bird discounts for November orders to spread out your workload
The Burnout Prevention Plan
Set your maximum order capacity right now. Decide how many custom orders you’ll accept, what your last order date will be, and stick to it. Every year, makers overcommit in December and end up exhausted, stressed, and swearing they’ll never do holidays again.
Your mental health matters more than squeezing in one more order.
Etsy’s search algorithm prioritizes fresh listings and shops that update regularly. Spend time this week refreshing your titles and tags with holiday-specific keywords: “Christmas gift,” “holiday decor,” “stocking stuffer,” “teacher gift,” “Secret Santa.”
But be specific—”handmade Christmas ornament for grandma” performs better than just “Christmas ornament.”
The sellers who thrive during the holidays aren’t necessarily the most talented crafters. They’re the ones who treat October like the strategic planning month it is. They make decisions now that their December selves will thank them for.
You’ve got the skills and the products. Now make sure you’ve got the systems in place to handle what’s coming.
What’s one thing you’ll tackle from this list this week?
P.S. - Speaking of planning ahead, if you’re sitting on other business ideas beyond your shop, there’s a free workshop on creating simple offers without overthinking. Sometimes the best business moves happen when we stop overplanning. Check it out here.
