Last week there was no update, because I was in the mountains, but here a bunch of fun AI things happening:
AI has not changed the world (yet): Sam Altman says that GPT-4 has not changed the world and that part of his definition for AGI is that the global economy should feel materially different aka “change the world”. It is really remarkable to hear this from someone who is a leading AI frontier:
“I don’t think 3.5 changed the world. It maybe changed the world’s expectations for the future, and that’s actually really important. And it did get more people to take this seriously and put us on this new trajectory. And that’s really important, too.[…] . But as an artifact, I don’t think we’re going to look back at that and say, “That was a threshold that really changed the world itself.[…] Does the global economy feel any different to you now or materially different to you now than it did before we launched GPT-4? I think you would say no.
AGI is not upon us: The chief scientist Yann Lecun at Meta does not think that AGI is upon us:
“1. why don't we have level-5 autonomous driving? Any 17 year old can learn to drive in 20 hours of training. 2. Why don't we have domestic robots that can clear the dinner table and fill the dishwasher? Any 10 year old can learn to do that in minutes. Obviously, we are still missing something big for machines to reach human-level intelligence.”
Software engineering will look similar to automatic driving. Andrej Karpathy who was at OpenAI and previously Director of AI at Tesla, commented on Devin, the first AI software engineer
“In my mind, automating software engineering will look similar to automating driving. E.g. in self-driving the progression of increasing autonomy and higher abstraction looks something like.[…]coordinating a number of tools that a developer needs to string together to write code: a Terminal, a Browser, a Code editor, etc., and human oversight that moves to increasingly higher level of abstraction. There is a lot of work not just on the AI part but also the UI/UX part. How does a human provide oversight? What are they looking at? How do they nudge the AI down a different path? How do they debug what went wrong? […] And it will look a lot more like supervising the automation, while pitching in high-level commands, ideas or progression strategies, in English. Good luck to the team!”
Apple is behind in the race of AI: Apple was never great at building software and although you could see this as a defeat, its good that Apple is in talks with other companies as Google to integrate other models in their OS. Otherwise, we might get another Siri!

Open Interpreter launched: It lets you run code on your computer to complete tasks by simply talking to a device that is remotely linked to your computer. Really well done and great demo video. This was all done by a group of random people that came together. Who does not love the internet?
Mushroom Walks and 40th birthday: I just came back from our annual ski trip in Austria and while I skiing was fine, what I really enjoyed was a snowshoe mushroom hike in the mountains walking into the sunset. I have to remind myself to do this more often. That also inspired me to celebrate my 40th birthday with a bunch of friends in the Dolomites.
