Good news! I have finally broken my book drought with some really remarkable non-fiction and thoughts are percolating around the noggin. More on that next week when the thoughts finish said percolating and are brewed into a tasty Thought Tea. Disgusting image. I’m so sorry I typed that.
Here’s a list of new releases that I now (finally!) have the wherewithal to read.
‘Anita de Monte Laughs Last’ by Xochitl Gonzalez. In 1985, the titular character is apparently dead, having fallen out of a window. In the present, an Art History student uncovers her work and life while wondering if history will repeat itself. As a rule, I am not into *mystery murdery* as a genre - trying to fall asleep is hard enough as it is. However, this book also has a bunch of my favourite themes and conceits: dual timelines, art, reckoning with the past, a sprinkle of magical realism, drawing heavily from real events. If Anita del Monte’s life sounds familiar, it’s because of echoes with Ana Mendieta, who died in the same way, and under similarly obscured circumstances.
