There! A bright spot blinks back at me from the sprinkler on the ceiling as I aim a hidden camera lens detector around the dark bedroom.

Twenty minutes into the long drive to surprise Daddy, flecks of snow dissolve on my windshield.

Ballroom lights dim then flicker as wedding guests recede to a shadowy corner away from the lifeless body on the floor, the body of my former soul mate.

For six days I’ve existed, here and light years away, in limbo, silently watching over my body—that mess of bones beneath a thin white blanket in the ICU—awaiting God’s sentence.
It was hard, but I did it.

The elevator doors barely open onto the second floor intensive care unit, when Nora rushes to get off.

“Package for a Señorita Bonita Ysabela Martinez Galvan-Perez,” the delivery guy drones, handing me his pen for my signature.

I slide my key in the deadbolt, but the door is already unlocked.

Five-thirty PM snowflakes brighten the darkening Minneapolis skyline through Shoua’s eighteenth floor windows.

“I know it could work this time. Alejandra is the love of my life, but I can’t give her the extravagant things she has grown accustomed to,” he says, showing me the simple ring he hopes she’ll accept.
I look up from my iPad in the ER family waiting room.
