It’s Guster on the Ocean again on Thompson’s Point in Portland, as the popular light rock band headlines a festival-length lineup of acts today and tomorrow that tonight includes Iron & Wine, The Barr Brothers, Dave Butler and Friends, Bebe Stockwell, and Cilla Bonnie (yay for Cilla!) at 4:30 p.m. Tix: $75 ($20 kids).
The Maine Outdoor Film Festival’s Selects Tour reaches Rockland’s Strand Theatre (345 Main St.) with a choice group of short cinematic works about Maine’s ecosystems and environmental challenges, including reporter-turned-filmmaker Tom Bell’s “Salt Marsh,” director Derek Dodge’s “Kennebec Rising,” and Luke Kaneb’s gorgeously shot “Steward-Ship: A Love Letter to the Maine Coast,” among others, at 7 p.m. Tix: $12 ($9 students and seniors).
The Bean Tones just make ya feel happy. Begun as a barbershop quartet, these four fine fellas picked up instruments and became a vocal-jazz group playing fun covers of all sorts of music. They play One Longfellow Square (181 State St., Portland) at 8 p.m. Tix: $30 (all ages).
It’s “machine” music with genuine humanity: the House of Roots Heartical Dub Machine, a Philly-based dub reggae sound system pumping out deep grooves with positive messages, at Oxbow Brewing Company (49 Washington Ave., Portland) at 8 p.m. Tix: $15 (21+).
Say what?! Say Zuzu are still around? Hell yeah! The Grantine State alt-country band made waves back in the early ’90s, when the genre was finding its feet, and nowadays they’re making new music and re-releasing classic albums. Catch ’em at Bayside Bowl (58 Alder St., Portland) with Portland’s versatile Whitney Walker opening at 8 p.m. Tix: $20-$25 (all ages).
Last month I had the pleasure of writing a film review for another local Substack, our media partners at The Maine Playweek, about Downeast Hardcore: Stories From the Kave, which premiered at the Maine International Film Festival. The beloved backwoods DIY venue hosted local, regional and national bands and gave teens in the Bucksport area a place to vent their existential angst in a supportive environment. The film screens tonight at Geno’s (625 Congress St., Portland) at 7 p.m., followed by a Q&A session and sets by Dying Mind, Corrective Measure, and Mortar. Tix: $20 ($25 under 21).
