The Topsham Fair opened yesterday and continues through Sunday at the fairgrounds off Route 196. Attractions on tap for today — aside from the rides and midway, of course — include ox pulls, an apple pie contest and a fudge contest, music by Blue Hill Brass and singer Chris James, and a demolition derby at 7 p.m. Gates open at 10 a.m. Tix: $15 ($5 seniors 60+).
Golden-throated Maine singer-songwriter Louisa Stancioff and her band play her engaging indie-rock songs on Portland’s Western Promenade at 6:30 p.m. Free for all.
The amazing musical and performance artist Christy Armstrong, subject of our June cover story, performs during a pop-up show at the Portland flower shop Saudade (98 Cross St.), titled Soulscape, with fellow acts Void, Rooted, and some local poets at 8 p.m. Tix: $5-$15 (all ages).
Ian Bates, a photographer based in the San Francisco Bay area, gives a talk about his three published collections of photos and his new work at The Bakery Photographic Collective (630 Forest Ave., Portland) at 6 p.m. Free. You can peruse his beautiful and provocative books on his website here. When was the last time you curled up on the couch or in the comfy chair and spent some quality time with a book of fine art photography or photojournalism? If, as in my case, it’s been years, may this be the inspiration you need. I know they’re expensive, but there’s always the library.
