It can’t be Ōtautahi, Christchurch. It already has Rolling Meadows covering New Year’s plus the country’s biggest music festival, Electric Avenue, just two months later. Same with Wānaka, which has stalwart Rhythm & Alps. It won’t be Te Whanganui-a-Tara, because unless you’re a waterfront raver or a Cake Tin metalhead the capital is firmly in the doldrums. Tauranga’s a possibility but One Love postponed its last festival and Bay Dreams has shown no sign of a comeback. It’s definitely not Tāmaki Makaurau because New Year’s festivals do not and have never really worked here. Nelson? New Plymouth? Taupō? Warkworth? Don’t make me laugh…
