On breezes, burning, and who's touching who

Yesterday I went for a slow walk around the hood just to get felt up by the breeze.

There’s something about a warm spring wind that feels like nature is curious about you. Playfully attending to you. The way it tousles your hair and your skin and the buds on the trees. It feels like attention itself.

In the contemplative tradition, fire is the quality of awareness that knows things by lighting them up. The knower and the known, inseparable.

Which means attention isn’t neutral. It works like a flame: it touches what it meets by becoming it. Wherever you bring it, something ignites: Your breath, your body, your grief, your rage at the state of the world, your secret joy. Wherever attention lands, that thing becomes vivid, alive, realer somehow.

We spend a lot of life keeping that too-hot experience at arm’s length, moving through the day on a controlled burn, not quite letting our attention enter things deeply.

We stay in our heads without knowing our bodies. We think about our feelings instead of experiencing them. We mistake the concept of experience for experience itself, and live our lives in the map instead of the territory. But that distance is an illusion.

I kept walking. Past a cluster of tulips that had gone feral overnight, past my coffee shop with its door propped open like an invitation, past some high school kids giggling about something juicy. And I noticed that wherever my attention went fully, the gap between me and the thing got very thin. Their laughter was happening in my chest too.

Me and the warm spring breeze, knowing each other in one bright flare of aliveness. And I wondered for a moment: who’s feeling up who?

That’s what we’re playing with tonight at the Moonlit Sit.
See you there :)
