Hi friends,
Tonight’s full moon is the Snow Moon, which feels like cosmic irony given that we got buried under three feet of the stuff here last week.
It’s our first moonlit sit of the year, and we’re starting simple: The practice for tonight is shamatha (aka calm abiding, shiné) - wholesome, good ol’ fashioned meditative quiescence.
We let the bodymind relax, find stability there, and then we see what we see. It’s the contemplative equivalent of chicken soup. Not sexy at all, but damn good for the tummy.
This is foundational work, because everything else we hope to become rests on our ability to be relaxed, stable, and attentive. To stay flexible in the storms that ravage our lives and our communities - the grief, the change, the uncertainty. And developing it turns out to be both easier and harder than it sounds.
This practice develops an equilibrium and responsiveness that is palpable and deeply honest. We start meeting each other where we actually are - in the muck of the moment - instead of where we think/hope/fear we should be. And we start to respond from the truth of our own experience, because (maybe for the first time ever) we’re paying attention to that experience and valuing it.
Life keeps going, of course, and we keep walking along with it, but we can learn to stumble over our own feet a whole lot less as we go. 😊
Join me tonight under the same moon, different time zones, in the basic humanness of paying attention.
