A week with the team has been spent. Yes, watching players practice can be useful to a point, but much more useful is to converse.
Visiting with players and coaches and people around the team is one of the best ways to discuss the big themes ahead.
Football has been talked and the Cowboys future has been debated. As you know, I do have a breeze of optimism at my back and I am feeling good about this team’s season. What does that mean? Well, I think the Cowboys have a real chance to be really good. There are a ton of moving parts, of course, but let’s define the bar to be “meaningful January Football” and then take it from there. I think a season with the playoffs attached is job No. 1 and I think that is reasonable.
But, to do these things, it better start with some very high-end performances from some very high-end players. Not only that, but they will need to be from newcomers, because the offense was already productive at league-high levels and it only yielded 7 wins. They will need about three or five more wins to get into the playoffs and that will require some additives to this mix.
That is why we have spent most of this offseason focused in three major directions for three major additions that should move this from a good offense to a very good team. Caleb Downs and Christian Parker have been discussed plenty and will get much more coverage as we go. But, they might not be the biggest addition. Because the biggest addition is the biggest man up front.
Yes, that man out there on the field who is wearing that big No. 92. They have him on their side.
Quinnen Williams is at his first camp with the Cowboys and if there is one player who can change things the fastest around here, it is the fantastic defensive tackle from the Jets.
