The first padded practice with actual body contact (in very small doses) took part Monday and I was able to get a peek at the way the Cowboys are practicing their defensive looks and we can start to fill in the names as we go look at how things will be deployed.
That means that some of the photos we were using to study the Eagles defense can now be somewhat translated to the Cowboys roster options and we can see how things might look – say, in a 1st and 10 against the Rams if the Rams are in 11 personnel and under center (as we imagine above). We think that would face a 5-man front in what is sort of a 5-1 with DeMarvion Overshown the only LB off the ball and then Caleb Downs is the 7th man in the box because the Cowboys will be in nickel at a 75% or higher rate.
Some of this is done by our belief that we will find Parker will definitely be running the Fangio defense and bringing what he has taught in Denver and Philadelphia here to Dallas to fit this current defensive roster that has been largely over-hauled with this in mind.
Luckily, we have been taking notes since he was hired on how Denver, Philadelphia, Miami, and other 2-high Fangio defenses have done to get clues on how Parker will do it. We fully expect he will wander off in his own directions, but since 2021, the 34 year old has served those five seasons under the following bosses:
2021 - Vic Fangio, Denver
2022 - Ejiro Evero, Denver
2023 - Vance Joseph, Denver
2024 - Vic Fangio, Philadelphia
2025 - Vic Fangio, Philadelphia

As you can see, with the possible exception of Vance Joseph, it is all the exact same scheme and philosophy. Also, in 2023 in Denver, Joseph started incorporating a great deal of 2-high Fangio/Evero ideas as the players were great fits in that structure and it has become the successful trend across the league that was mostly sprouted from dealing with so much Shanahan/McVay offensive structures.
And that is sort of the ideas I wanted to visit about this morning.
