The Essay I Didn’t Write Because a Dog Changed His Name and Moved In

Sometimes life interrupts the writing schedule. Sometimes it has four paws, several names, and excellent manners.

I usually publish here on Tuesday mornings.

That was the plan this week, too.

I had noble intentions. I had thoughts. I had fragments. I had the faint outline of something meaningful beginning to stir.

Then Scrappy arrived.

Or Quinn.

Or Finn.

At this point, the dog has had more identities than a witness in a federal protection program.

He came to us as Scrappy, which was a perfectly respectable rescue-dog name. It said survivor. Street smarts. Maybe a little “don’t mess with me, pal.”

For a little while, we tried Quinn.

But after about ten days in our house, we realized something.

He is not a Scrappy.

He is not a Quinn.

He is a Finn.

Finn has moved in with the confidence of a dog who apparently reviewed the paperwork before we did. He did not storm the place. He did not make demands. He simply settled in, charmed everyone, and made it increasingly difficult for us to imagine him leaving.

This is how foster failure happens.

Not with a thunderclap.

Not with dramatic music.

But with a look.

A nap.

A tail wag.

A dog fitting into the rhythm of the house as if he had been waiting for us to catch up.

He and Annie are doing beautifully together. His manners are excellent. His training is better than some people I have worked with over the years, and I include myself in that list on certain days.

So this week’s essay did not get written because life happened.

Good life.

Messy life.

Dog beds, vet visits, name changes, adjustment periods, and the quiet little miracle of realizing that someone who was supposed to be temporary has become family.

I may get back to deeper thoughts next week.

This week, the deeper thought is simple:

Sometimes love does not arrive on schedule.

Sometimes it arrives with paws.

And sometimes it answers to Finn.

Less noise. More listening. Better conversations.
