I read this post by Leadership First on LinkedIn, titled “The Greatest Compliment You Can Ever Receive...” “You Made a Positive Impact in My Life

And it really made me think of my own leadership career.

I can’t agree more with the sentiment of the article.

I’ve been stopped about 10 times in my life by people who have worked with me in various organizations. Usually, 5-20 years afterward.

I remember each of these conversations almost verbatim. And they were like the title: I made a lasting impression on them as a leader.

As the article pointed out, it had everything to do with my purpose and how I showed up as a leader. Often the situations were tense and challenging for both of us. But the outcomes were beneficial and long-lasting.

Metric

I’ve literally led hundreds to thousands of folks over the years. So, you might think that 10 confirmed life-changing events is a small number.

However, I take great pride in it. I’d take equivalent pride if it was only one person.

You see, I don’t think it’s the numbers at all. Instead, it’s how I showed up with my human-centric purpose.

As the article states, did I—

  1. Lead with a Pure Heart

  2. Practice Radical Presence

  3. Choose Value over Extraction

And I can honestly say that I’ve done that over the years. Have I been perfect? No. But I’ve aspired to be a human-centric leader.

I’ll leave you with this quote from the article—

If you find yourself caught in the exhausting cycle of chasing titles just to satisfy an insatiable ego or appease an unyielding organizational chart, it is time to dismantle that framework. It is time to drop your protective corporate armor, show up with radical transparency, and re-center your daily efforts around the humanity of the individuals standing right in front of you.

Commit to being the leader who cheers people on, the mentor who builds a sanctuary of absolute trust, and the colleague who actively looks for opportunities to add value to every space they enter.

Leaders in my network, consider how you’re showing up and what legacy you’re leaving behind. It’s truly the one metric that matters!

Stay agile, my friends,

Bob.
