It seems that more and more leaders today understand that if they truly want to bring out the best performance IN those they lead, they must be able to bring value TO those they lead.

The team-member’s experience must be fulfilling and provide a sense of purpose higher than money alone. There’s nothing “touchy-feely” or “soft” about this. It’s simply understanding human nature.

Want the most functional team and profitable company? Then make it about those you lead. This is much more than just a nice thought — it’s a necessity. (And yes, it’s also a lot more personally gratifying.) :-)

Key Point: Today’s great leader understands that as the leader, they are simply the head server, creating the environment where those they lead can thrive.

Whether we’re looking at a massively successful global manufacturing company such as Barry-Wehmiller (led by their iconic CEO, the late Bob Chapman, author of the book Everybody Matters) or my favorite local restaurant — the small but always-packed (and for good reason) Juno Beach Café — sustainable profitability results from a culture of employee-focused leadership.

Of course, far too few leaders still understand this — and if they do, it’s only on a surface level — but those who do are the ones who earn the loyalty and trust of those they lead.

And the financial results speak for themselves.

Today’s Exercise: Note the leaders you know who bring this type of leadership to their organizations and determine how you can emulate them and their specific ways of doing so.
