Some People Search for the Perfect Lipstick

I’ll never give up my quest for the perfect jeans. Somewhere along the way, denim started being designed for someone taller, longer, and apparently living in a completely different body than mine.

The knees never land where my knees actually are, the hems have their own plans, and “perfect fit” usually means “budget for alterations.”

Here’s my next plan: I never thought about doing this with the clothes I actually wear everyday. Yes- I’ve always tailored the nice stuff, but this time I chose to invest in me, and possibly spend more than the price of the actual clothing…

Meet Kenneth Wildgoose, formerly the lead tailor for the well-dressed at Saks Fifth Avenue. When the Palm Beach location closed, he opened his own shop— Bespoken — and I’m not exaggerating when I say he’s a game changer. Last season, he practically remade the outfit I wore to the Times 100 Gala, reworked a few Saint Laurent jackets that just weren’t right, and fixed some “made-to-measure” suits that somehow weren’t made to measure for me.

And the best part? He does house calls.

These salmon pants only worked when I wasn’t eating carbs, and I am now, so he let out the waist. And I fell in love with the summer jean fabric of the Hey Gang, but they were way too wide for my liking, so he pinned the hem, and is narrowing down the leg.

I even tailored a pair of golf pants by G/FORE. I don’t play golf, but they are great for day time when I want a comfy, light weight, and well-fitted pant.

These jeans just needed a little tuck to make them a little less “bell like” at the ankles.

Lastly, this Celine jacket. I bought it when it was on sale for 50% off. I saw it on Emma Grede and had to have it. When I saw the price tag, I was taken aback. But on sale, I bit the bullet. However, the arm cut wasn’t my favorite, but the jacket was definitely a keeper.

I asked Kenneth if, by any chance, he could replace the sleeves. He said, “Why not?” So now it’s long sleeves. I’m so happy and will wear it at weddings and black-tie events for a long time to come.
