My husband and I recently attended a black-tie wedding in New York City, just about 12 miles from our home. Steven really wanted to make a night of it and stay at a hotel. He finally convinced me (not easy…I love being home), and I’m so glad he did. The hotel was amazing and I highly recommend it.

Of course, staying overnight meant I had to think beyond just my wedding look and plan for the next morning too, especially knowing we’d be back with the kids.

I’ve talked about my “wedding uniform” before. It may need a little tweaking, but I always feel good in a silk dress with a cropped sweater. What I don’t always feel good in? The shoes. Especially the high, “appropriate” ones that feel fancy, but not like I’ve suddenly turned into someone’s grandmother… even though I technically am one.

I have a beautiful collection of pointy-toe heels that I haven’t touched in over a decade. They’re too pretty to get rid of, so they live in my overflow closet in the basement.

These days, I really stand behind four go-to shoes:

Why I Love Them: Choosing my wedding shoes was tough. I brought two options and literally wore one of each around the hotel room for ten minutes trying to decide. Steven, of course, said they both looked good…very helpful. I ultimately chose the pair that felt a bit more feminine, and I’m so happy I did. I didn’t take them off all night, and they were incredibly comfortable. I had worn my heels before and remembered they didn’t hurt, which helped seal the deal.

They come in a few colors and two heel heights. I went with the lower heel…just enough height to feel a little statuesque without sacrificing comfort.

Why I Love Them: My Gucci loafers are what I reach for when I want to feel a little more polished, especially in cities like New York, LA, Miami, or London. They’re comfortable enough for shopping days, but if Steven ropes me into one of his marathon walks, I’m switching into sneakers.

Why I Love Them: My New Balance sneakers are the perfect walking shoe. I can wear them with my Splits59 tights and a sweatshirt, and then easily throw them on with jeans the next morning. I have a few colors, but black is always a safe bet.
