I’ll survive, or I won't

Rev. Kenn Blanchard · Bluesman Chronicles

“To live is the rarest thing in the world. Most people exist, that is all.” — Oscar Wilde

I say this as someone who also fell into the trap: we are living in an era consumed by foolish distractions. So much of modern entertainment and social drama is entirely hollow, draining our energy without giving anything back. Watching reality TV and tracking online spectacles is like feeding your mind slow poison. It robs you of the hours you could spend creating your own reality. My advice to anyone reading this is to stop living vicariously through the screen. Reclaim your focus, invest in your own journey, and live a life that belongs uniquely to you.

I have had to learn this clarity the hard way. When I think about my upcoming cancer surgery, the depression has lifted because either I’ll survive, or I won’t.

The outcome will be what it will be. Either the surgery succeeds and the cancer is removed, or the disease will spread and take its course. If it metastasizes, I do not plan to endure chemotherapy or radiation. I see no value in poisoning my body simply to stretch out the time I have left. While I might reconsider if faced with that exact moment, right now I am truly at peace with whichever way this goes.

If I am granted a second chance, I will not waste it by just “existing.” I will live differently—with less judgment, fewer arguments, and a heart that strives to see the best in everything. I will live with profound gratitude for life and God’s blessings. My music will remain my path, and I will continue to play for the seniors and the sick who need it most. To mark this new beginning, I hope to relocate near the water, letting the ocean mirror the peace I’ve found.

Ultimately, I am resting in God’s hands, which is the safest place to be. If I am granted more time, I promise to use it to bring more kindness, music, and love into our world. Thank you for being such a beautiful part of my blessing. I love you all.

P.S. Trust my luck to spend my absolute favorite month of the year in full recovery mode! Happy Juneteenth, Father’s Day, and birthday to everyone. My goal right now is a miraculous recovery—getting myself back to practicing guitar, walking outside, and soaking up the weather without any unnecessary “extra” drama.
