Last month the federal NDP leadership race concluded - if you didn’t already know, Avi Lewis won on the first ballot quite handily, with the filmmaker beating Edmonton Strathcona MP Heather McPherson 56% to 29.5%, or 39,734 votes to 20,899. Pretty solid win if nothing else, though unfortunately we don’t have a breakdown even by province as the NDP doesn’t want to be transparent.
In lieu of that however, we can at least check up on the donor data. Last time, Avi Lewis was handily beating his opponents in fundraising. By the end, he was still doing the same - in fact Lewis had 56% of all individual donors* (little under 11,000), vs 21% for McPherson, 11% for Rob Ashton, 8% for Tanille Johnston and 4% for Tony McQuail, surprisingly coming close to the actual end result save for Ashton’s lacklustre results.
