Fiona Joy Hawkins and Rebecca Daniel take the piano and violin to new levels of contemporary performance. Traveling from Australia to our studios in Northern California they performed their music to an audience of 4 (me and our crew).

They have a classic sound with twists of improvisation so that no two performances are identical. Magic can happen when artists feed off each other’s melodic inspiration.

You’d think this was natural in a studio today, but most recordings are made by overdubbing parts using headphones. That means each musician performs their parts individually, listening to what’s already been recorded. Whether they follow a click track or other musical parts already recorded, we feel this limits the natural flow of rhythm and dynamics.

As a music producer and audio engineer, I’m used to being hired to record using samples, plugins, many overdubs and mixing it all to create a massive sound. Some of those recordings take years to finish. Don’t misunderstand - I enjoy making those records with artists and fulfilling their dreams.

Blue Coast Records, my label, fills a gap we believe is missing in today’s music: artists performing live in the same room listening to each other and reacting to the dynamics and groove so that the music becomes one sound.
