Gregory James is a guitarist known for his expansive diversity in style. From jazz to world-beat to latin influences music, he would feature the finest players in all those genres for his albums. For this recording, he asked me about adding trumpet to his latin grooves.

I had just been to Colorado recording an album that featured a then college professor who taught trumpet named Ron Miles. I thought he was an amazing player with a Miles Davis kind of sound. Greg took a chance and flew him out from Denver.

At the same time, I was working on projects with Hans Wendl, who managed some of the most talented jazz players in the world. Hans wasn’t interested in signing another unknown player to his roster…. until he met Ron. Ron and Hans happened to be at my studio on the same day for a casual visit. The two of them continued a non-stop conversation that eventually led to Ron signing with Hans as his manager. It wasn’t long before Ron’s career took off.

He was destined to be the next Miles Davis and a darling of jazz critics. Sadly, an illness took Ron from us much too early. Look him up, you won’t be disappointed.

The album, Ananda, features performances by these incredible musicians. I would like to personally thank Greg James for taking chances on making recordings that were outside the box and allowed great players to thrive. Here are the players on this wonderful album.

Gregory James: Acoustic, Electric and Midi Guitars
Peter Michael Escovedo: Percussion
Paul McCandless: English Horn, Soprano Sax, Bass Clarinet
Ron Miles: Trumpet
Marc van Wageningen Bass Guitar
Paul van Wageningen: Drums

Mostly Piano is a live studio collection album centered on solo and duo piano performances, featuring Fiona Joy Hawkins, John R Burr, Art Lande, and many more Blue Coast artists. The repertoire spans contemporary instrumental works, jazz standards, and popular songs.

New from Blue Coast Records this live studio album brings Art Lande, Paul McCandless, and Bruce Williamson to a stripped-down contemporary jazz setting. With no bass or drums, the music centers on piano paired with shifting combinations of reeds, flutes, and saxophones, creating open space that emphasizes tone, phrasing, and interaction like you’ve never heard before.

Acceptance continues the direction Billy Childs set on Rebirth, built around acoustic piano, defined themes, and open improvisation. With Billy joined by Steve Wilson, Hans Glawischnig, and Eric Harland, the music shifts between arranged sections and extended solos, moving through changes in tempo and intensity.

We love hearing from you. Send us your thoughts, pictures of your system and share any new music artists you’d like us to hear.
