Ten years ago, I typed the following sentence:
Of course it started on a Monday.
That Garfieldian statement was the very first sentence in a book about Brody Tate, the world’s biggest smartass, trying to survive in New York City during the zombie apocalypse. One decade and countless distractions later, I finally put down on paper how Brody’s story ended. It’s fitting, then, that I’m sharing it with you on a Monday.
That’s right: Bleeders: All Hell is out today on Kindle and paperback. It’s the third and final entry in the series, and as I said last week, I’m a little sad to be seeing this phase come to an end, but also excited to move onto other projects. One such project will be addressing another bit of unfinished business in my catalog (no spoilers yet), and another will be something entirely new.
The new story is called The Rift, and if I were to try to describe it as complicated as possible, I would call it a Scifi-Cosmic Horror Thriller. I’ll share some details in the coming weeks, but for now I’ll just say that it involves equal portions family drama, deep sea exploration, and existential dread. This one wasn’t in my writing plans at all, and in fact started as a dream, which I tried to turn into a short story before I realized it refused to stay a short story.
Sometimes, we just don’t have a choice in the matter.
I’m not fully decided on what format the story will be published in, whether I’ll be releasing it straight to novel, as an audio drama, or serialized here on Substack. Maybe it could be a combination of two or more. What do you guys think? Is there room in your inboxes for a serial, or would you rather enjoy the new story another way? I’m curious how everyone is consuming their stories these days. Books seem to be in a curious phase right now, with half the people saying they’re dying and the other half claiming they’re back in a big way. The only thing they seem to agree on is that audio is more popular than ever. Let me know where you stand.
