It’s Michelle Perez, the featured artist for Bloodletter Issue Six: Play. Her work is a paragon of confident line work, wry commentary, and vibrant disturbia. We’re obsessed and you will be, too. And writers, if you’re still thinking of submitting, imagine your work illustrated by hers. Okay? That’s right.
Michelle Perez is an illustrator based in Providence, RI. After graduating from the Rhode Island School of Design, Michelle has gone on to work in editorial illustration, graphic design, and public art. She sees her work as an extension of the curiosity she holds for the world around her.
Now, enjoy a little teaser from this month’s paid content, a letter from Bloodletter Editor Anna Laura. She wants to tell you just how kinky she likes it:
Heeeeyyyy everyone,
It’s me, the mysterious-and-elusive-yet-obviously-extremely-accessible editor of Bloodletter Magazine. Hope you’re all having a delicious October so far—slaying or kissing vampires and skulking around in some pretty cemeteries.
I’m here to share with you some of my shameless kinks ;) No, not those kinds of kinks. Dirty mind! Don’t tempt me! ;) ;) You know, my magazine kinks…
1. Polygenre or Genre Unbound: I’m a slut for the multi-genred. And also the genreless. Give me an essay about your grandma’s weird house that’s also an article about snakes, or a poem that’s also an unnecessarily scathing book review. Toss some lies in with your nonfiction! I love an unreliable narrator. I’m particularly partial to a wacked-out memoir.
And finally, a word from Gothic it-girl (and Bloodletter columnist extraordinaire) Claire Orrange—on the origins of her kink:
No, my kink is not karma. It doesn’t wear a fur suit. It’s not necessarily bound by leather or wrapped up in chains, either. I don’t wear it with pride, but when I do divulge it to some, the look on their faces is priceless if they don’t happen to agree that this way is the only way to enjoy sex. But then there are those who understand at an intimate level where this kink of mine has come from, who know exactly what it’s like to become aroused by that sort of thing because they too were forced to fraternize in close quarters with the preferred sex at an inchoate age when their sexuality was still forming inside and shouldn’t have yet been put to the test of reality. It probably should have been hemmed in by the guardrails of heterosexual coming-of-age along with the rest of my peers, stifling as those guardrails may be. But no, some of us were left to buoy along an ocean of sweat and dirty towels and boys sexually harassing us because we were effeminate in the locker room.
