Dan Green · Field Notes of an Ordinary Pastor

For a number of years at Banstead Community Church we’ve committed to trying to sing a Psalm or a song based on a Psalm during our morning service. After all, Ephesians 5:19 tells us that we are to be “speaking to one another in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs.”

We’ve sung this version of Psalm 72:

Hail to the Lord’s Anointed
To the tune of Awake, Awake, O Zion

Hail to the Lord’s Anointed,
great David’s greater Son!
Our King has come and all the earth shall see:
He comes to break oppression,
to set the captives free;
defend the poor and rule in equity.

Bless the LORD, who alone does wondrous things!
Fill the earth with his glory and his praise!
Bless his name, and your tribute gladly bring!
Let the earth with his praises ever ring
!

Kings shall fall down before him,
their gifts and tribute bring;
his kingdom shall extend across the earth.
All nations shall adore him,
his praise all peoples sing;
lift up your hearts and praise his matchless worth!

Bless the LORD, who alone does wondrous things!
Fill the earth with his glory and his praise!
Bless his name, and your tribute gladly bring!
Let the earth with his praises ever ring
!

He comes to help the needy,
and those who suffer wrong,
to comfort those who suffer pain and strife.
He turns their tears to gladness,
their darkness into light,
from fear and violence he redeems their life.

Bless the LORD, who alone does wondrous things!
Fill the earth with his glory and his praise!
Bless his name, and your tribute gladly bring!
Let the earth with his praises ever ring
!

His name shall stand forever,
his fame shall know no end;
and all his people in his presence rest.
For all the earth shall praise him,
his kingdom shall extend.
Exalt his name! All nations call him blessed!

Bless the LORD, who alone does wondrous things!
Fill the earth with his glory and his praise!
Bless his name, and your tribute gladly bring!
Let the earth with his praises ever ring
!
