Do you want our arcade machine?

At Gamescom 2 weeks ago, we’ve showed off our arcade machine again (we didn’t really post about it) and we’ve had a lot of interest in actually buying our eye-searing fun machine called the Super Battle Arcade Machine . Specifically, mostly from businesses and organisations. We’ve thought about making our arcade machine into an actual product a few times already, but with…

Mari0 is now 10 years old

We really don’t know how, but it’s still getting near a thousand downloads every week after ten years . Or to be more precise, 1400 per week if we dig a little deeper. By rough data, we’ve had 3,424,249 downloads since Mari0’s release on 3rd March 2012. Numbers are great and all, but the more surprising thing is some of the emails we’ve received in the recent months…

Timelines Demo released

Hello world. Remember playing demos from CDs you got bundled with computer magazines? Of course not, that was 10 years before Stabyourself.net existed. Which has also existed for over 10 years by now. How time flies. Do you even know what a CD is? It’s like a floppy disk but without the case. What will they think of next? As the title suggests, we’re releasing a demo of a game called…

Gamescom 2017 and Not Donkey Kong

Hi! Long time no see. We’re still alive and we definitely still make games. We’re exhibiting at Gamescom in Cologne, Germany once again! Gamescom is as usual sold out at this point, but if you’ll be there, visit us in Hall 10.2 at column K12 and say hi! This time we have a special treat: we made our own Super Battle Arcade machine! It’s pretty fancy if I do say so myself,…

Mari0 SE, Gamescom, the future

First of all, before anything else, if you’re reading this: Thank you very much. The fact that you are reading this means that you still think of Stabyourself.net, founded with only two people a little over three years ago, which is incredibly awesome and humbling. There are plenty of small game developers like us around and having an actual audience is an honor. So, first of all: Mari0 SE…

Gamescom 2015 - Super Versus Battle Arcade

We have had a pretty cool idea in our minds for almost 2 years, and this year we managed to realize it with outside help. We are happy to present Super Versus Battle Arcade , a collection of retro games adapted to be played on a huge 3,6 x 2,4 meter LED wall (170 inches diagonal with 96 x 64 resolution). The wall of games will be playable until the end of Gamescom 2015 in Hall 10.2 in the Retro…

Gamescom 2014

We’re baaaaack ! It’s again our time to confuse the general public with games they think they know but don’t exactly work like they think they should. We’ll be posting pictures again and we’ll also tweet about new SMB TT records - we hope to break last year’s 974 replays. For more information, check here !

Help me with my bachelor thesis (By playing a game!)

Hey everyone! As part of my bachelor thesis that I have been writing I have developed a simple game prototype that you can now play. It would be super great if you could download the game and then fill out the survey. Don’t expect a full game, though. You can download the game for Windows here: http://guegan.de/stuff/dontgetfired1_2.zip After you finished the game, fill out the short survey…

The Pirate Bay Bundle

Hey everyone! Long time without a blogpost, we know, and we’d like to apologize for that. We have been really busy with our personal lives and only occasionally had time to work on Stabyourself.net related things. We’d like to promise more frequent updates, but it might be another while until we have something new to post. In other news, a man known by the name of moshboy compiled 100…

Two thirds there!

Earlier today we updated the OSX downloads of Mari0 , Not Pacman , Trosh and Order of Twilight . So if you upgraded to OSX 10.9 and want to get back to wasting time, go ahead and redownload those games! Credits for the Not Pacman port go to Felix Dumenil. That leaves Ortho Robot and Not Tetris 2. Ortho Robot is really not a problem but I want to update the game a little and thought this would be a…

OSX 10.9 breaks everything ever

So around 3 days ago, Apple released their newest OS to the X called Mavericks (10.9), and it breaks every game on this website. We are aware of this and will hopefully update all the OSX downloads with a fix very soon. I might actually take the opportunity and update at least some of the old games a little, we’ll see. Until then!

Animated Tiles

Some time ago, I added animated tiles which loop through frames endlessly and can add a lot to a mappack if done right. Then about a week ago, I made it so the animated tiles can have different properties (like collision or underwater) on each frame, which would allow you to make those megaman blocks that disappear and are a general pain in the ass (unless you use jet rush..) Yesterday I went and…

Mari0 on Pandora

While we were at gamescom, the people of the Pandora, which is a linux based handheld, had a booth 50 meters from us. At one point one of them, PitSeb, came over to us to show us that he ported Not Pacman to his Pandora (You can read about that over here ). Since then, he has created a package for Mari0 so that if you find yourself in the possession of such a device, you can now find Mari0 in the…

Super Mario Bros. Time Trials

Here it is. 974 players completing the level. We would’ve had more, but at some point getting the high score became really serious business so there was probably about 1000 game resets after the first 3 jumps didn’t work out. You should watch it in 1080p for a crisp overview of the action. Many options of publishing this video were considered, but it turned out that an embedded 4800…

Boy do we have a treat for you

Remember those 1000 replays of Mario running through the time trial level we collected at Gamescom? Well we’ll have the fully rendered video soon, and here’s a little preview for now:

Gamescom 2013 - Roundup

And it’s done! We ended the week pretty tired but it was worth it. We met some old friends, made some new, and confused everyone else. A lot of Marios were killed, a lot of pellets were eaten, a big pile of tetris pieces were cut into pieces without any rhyme or reason and we collected nearly 1000 runs of our Time Trial level. The number would be much greater if it weren’t for those…

Gamescom 2013 - pink is the new black

It’s time for the biggest gaming event on the planet that dwarves even E3 and The International: Gamescom ! And we’re not just saying that because we’ll be appearing there with playable games , but it’s kind of a big deal for everyone: new gaming consoles and VCRs are getting released soon and it is the rematch round for the fight of the titans. But yes, we’re at…

Coins!

One of the most requested editor features (and who am I to judge?) is the ability to place coins on any tile. Currently, coins are a tile themselves so placing one on a background hill or similar doesn’t work. But that changes NOW! Coming with Mari0 SE is the long awaited ability of putting coins literally everywhere . Wanna put that mushroom kingdom gold in a bush? Heck yeah! Wanna put…

Scripted Sequences

What’s up everyone! Here’s the main thing that I’ve been working on for the past 3 days during the live streams: The animation system! Or scripted sequences or something. I’m not sure what to call it yet. It’s basically a Warcraft 3 Trigger Editor inspired GUI where you can set triggers, conditions and actions which will then play out during the level. In the above…

Enemy spawners

Entities that spawn enemies on input with a certain velocity (Yes, hammers are enemies.) The above gif uses a square wave signal (set to 140ms off, 140ms on) in combination with an AND gate and a button to create a cannon. All the wiring and stuff in the gif could be hidden so only the button and cannon would be visible.
