Mystery Bruises

I noticed it on a Zoom call with Zach. I was mid-pontification, arms behind my head, think talking, probably enthusiastically agreeing with Zach when I saw it. Dark purple bruise, pretty big, just above my elbow. No clue how it got there. Don’t remember getting cleated or taking a fall. Just another mystery bruise. I get a lot of them – sometimes I see them, other times Kelly points them out with…

Control Issues

I play in an over-40 men’s soccer league on Tuesday nights in Chapel Hill. I’m the goalkeeper on my team, we’re called Boca Seniors – which is a play on Boca Juniors, one of the biggest clubs in Argentina. Other teams in our league are Stroke City (Stoke City), Oldcastle (Newcastle), you get the idea. It’s competitive. Like, actually competitive. A lot of these guys played college ball. Some guys…

Eric Montross Basketball Camp

The first time I met Eric Montross , I was 13 years old. Summer of 1994. The Heels had won the NCAA National Championship the year before, then got bounced by Bill effing Curley and Boston College that spring. Eric was either about to be or had had just been drafted by the Celtics. I spent part of that summer working as a Senate page / coffee go-fer at the North Carolina General Assembly. One…

Pokemon Theme

This is 5-year old Thomas singing the Pokemon theme. I couldn't help but join him on the 2nd verse -- such a fun song to sing. I wanted something simple and punchy, but Thomas insisted the guitar harmonies and outro solo. He also insisted on singing the guitar stabs, which I think is a nice touch. He's tough to work with, but I can't really question his vision for the music.

Not Your Turn

Thomas and Catherine wanted to make a song about Pokemon. They started fighting over who to got sing more, who got to sing first, etc. So this song is about Pokemon and taking turns. T & C played the keyboard duet solo in the outro. This is the first song with my new midi keyboard...and the first rap verse I've written since I was probably 8 years old. :)

Fast, Tough, and a Little Bit Mean

Before every soccer game, I tell Thomas to play fast, tough, and a little bit mean. So we made a song about it.

Just Be Careful

This song is about things that a 5 year old thinks are dangerous. Thomas wrote all of the lyrics himself. The uplifting bridge offsets the ominous tone and lyrics. Just be careful!

Progressive Metal

My 5 year old son Thomas provided the concept and vocals. I played guitars and bass. Garageband did the rest.

Twinkle Twinkle

We decided to make a song for Barbara and started out with Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star. And then I figured out how to auto-tune in GarageBand. This one was fun.

Beach Time

Thomas always sings "You Know Its Beach Time, You Know It, Know It" when we're packing for, going to, or at the beach. So we turned it into a Beach Boys song.

RIP Maw Maw Foxtail

My precious grandmother Catherine Maude Rhyne Boggs Postell died today. And my heart is broken. She's the last grandparent. My maternal grandmother died when I was 11 years old and both of my grandfathers died before I was born. She was a hub for the Boggs/Rhyne family - and not just for her children and grandchildren, but also for dozens of aunts, uncles, neices, nephews, cousins, and family…

Pig Pickin' At Lee's

My dear friend and former college roommate Lee Bidgood married Emily Behler in Charlottesville, VA this weekend. I've never attended a wedding that so perfectly and beautifully reflected the personalities and passions of the bride and groom. Lee - who once said "There is nothing I'd rather eat than food." - hosted a rehearsal dinner pig pickin' (see below) at his house Saturday night that featured…

Merry Christmas From Maw Maw

My grandmother's Christmas card this year was so Christmasy and grandmothery that I thought I'd post it here. May it warm your post-holiday spirit. To set the stage - the card has a cow on the front. The text inside says "Merry Christmas and a Happy Moo Year." Maw Maw added the following: Back in the 50's, we had a cow just like this one. Her name was Ann. I worked from 2PM til 11PM and I had to…

Carl Stowe Comes Home

As many of you know, Kelly's father Carl Stowe was in a near-fatal automobile accident on March 29, 2006. After miraculously surviving the initial trauma, spending 2+ months in intensive care, and then enduring 4 long months of recovery in a hospital and long term care facility, Carl is coming home on Wednesday, October 11. Carl still can't walk - but he can stand and manage to transfer from his…

Why “Outfit” May Be the Greatest Song Ever Written

2025 update — this post is pretty dumb, but I’m leaving it up to prove to the world that I was really into Jason Isbell’s older stuff. :) — After careful deliberation, I'm happy to declare that "Outfit" is indeed (one of) the greatest song(s) ever written. Jason Isbell wrote "Outfit" for "Decoration Day", which is arguably the Truckers' best overall record. You can hear a brief snippet of the song…

The Plunger

Kelly’s first apartment was a dump. From the 3 inch crack between the front door and floor to the toilet that never flushed to the view (and scent) of the dumpsters outside her bedroom window – the place was a much like Tom Hanks’ home in the “The Money Pit.” I guess that’s just the way it is with apartments in college... One magical day, Kelly’s toilet was functioning properly. Then, it wasn’t –…

Houston Patterson

My friend Houston Patterson died 8 years ago this June. I met Houston when he was 7 and I was 6. We played on the Dallas Yankees t-ball team. Houston was the best player on the team and played first base. He had this killer move at the plate. He would position his body like he was going to hit the ball to left field and then wait until the defense shifted in anticipation of a rocket shot to left…
