State of multi-player Wayland

I’ve been fascinated by the idea of attaching multiple mice to one computer, and then having multiple mouse cursors inside of one desktop environment! I just spent three weeks investigating how well that’s currently supported on Linux & Wayland. Let me tell you what I found! The results are surprisingly cool. Together with this blog post, I’m publishing a number of little tools and patched…

How to build a circular LCD clock

In our kitchen, the only device that displays the time is our oven! :D Looking at it was always a bit annoying. So I recently built a wall clock from a circular LCD screen! It’s really great because it can display any clock face you want, even ones you code yourself! If you want one too, here’s how to do it! Hardware You’ll need: Waveshare’s 7 inch circular LCD It’s 1080 x 1080 pixels, and the…

Visual 0 to 1500 🏊

When I started running, I loved Tom Benninger’s Visual C25K graphic, a diagram of how the “Couch to 5K” training plan is structured. (You can read more about it in my report of running my first marathon .) So when I took up swimming earlier this month, I wanted a similar visual for the popular Zero to 1650 training plan. Couldn’t find one, so I made one myself! I also adapted the plan to metric…

Hiking around Hong Kong Island

I spent three weeks in East Asia recently, together with two friends – we travelled to Hong Kong, Shenzhen, and Taiwan! Occasionally, I went hiking, to train for an upcoming 100-kilometer hike. Here’s a report of my favorite trip! It has been adapted from this Mastodon thread , which I live-tooted as I walked! We were in Hong Kong, and I was looking for suitable trails for a hiking day. The Hong…

Exploring Firefox DevTools

In the beginning of 2026, I spent some time exploring the Firefox Developer Tools! Because usually, when I open them, I want to do some specific thing very quickly, so I never intentionally tried to learn about all the things the DevTools can do. It was a fun exercise. Here’s some cool things I found! Pop out the Toolbox window First, a really convenient thing: You can “pop out” the Toolbox into a…

Switching to your headset mic automatically

tl;dr: Save the file at the bottom of this post as ~/.config/alsa-card-profile/paths/analog-input-headset-mic.conf , then run systemctl restart --user wireplumber . Done! Here’s some more background: Since I got my Framework 13, I had an annoying problem: When I plug in my headset, it doesn’t switch to the headset microphone automatically – I have to manually select the “Headset Microphone” port…

My best tricks from 13 years of losing weight

Over the years, I tried many techniques and tricks that helped me lose weight. In this article, I want to share the best of them! Maybe some of them can be useful for you, as well. Big picture In the summer of 2012, I decided that I wanted to lose weight. I had been more or less overweight throughout my school years and wanted to change that. At the time, I found the text The Hacker’s Diet , which…

Building a tiny Linux from scratch

Last week, I built a tiny Linux system from scratch, and booted it on my laptop! Here’s what it looked like: Let me tell you how I got there. I wanted to learn more about how the Linux kernel works, and what’s involved in booting it. So I set myself the goal to cobble together the bare neccessities required to boot into a working shell. In the end, I had a tiny Linux system with a size of 2.5 MB,…

Crossing the USA by train

Today, I get to start a train trip I’ve always wanted to do: Going from New York to San Francisco!! This map shows that first section of the trip. I’m taking the “Lake Shore Limited”, an overnight train. Will arrive in Chicago in around 20 hours, and amazingly, that’s the only time I’ll have to change trains! We’re first going north, following the Hudson river. The seats are big and comfy! But the…

Cashew Cheese

You might’ve heard this concern about veganism: “I couldn’t live without cheese!” 🧀 And indeed, the vegan cheese that’s available in supermarkets is often… not great so far. So I wanted to show you how to make a simple, quick & cheap cheese from cashews! It’s tangy, savory, and has lots of protein! This is what we’ll need: 300 g roasted, salted cashews 1.5 tbsp lemon or lime juice 1 tbsp vinegar…

Fifty Things you can do with a Software Defined Radio 📻

Last week, I went on an adventure through the electromagnetic spectrum! It’s like an invisible world that always surrounds us, and allows us to do many amazing things: It’s how radio and TV are transmitted, it’s how we communicate using Wi-Fi or our phones. And there are many more things to discover there, from all over the world. In this post, I’ll show you fifty things you can find there – all…

Why you might want a personal wiki

At the MRMCD 2023 , I gave a talk about my personal wiki, which I’ve been using for 12 years now! My wiki consists only of a folder with text files inside, and a simple Vim plugin, but it has since become a central part of my life and ultimately the secret to my productivity ! In the talk, I explain how my wiki works, what I use it for, and encourage you to build one too! Here’s the (German)…

Haptic compass belt 🧭

I’ve always wanted to build a compass belt! The idea is to attach a couple of vibration motors to a belt, use a compass sensor to find north, and then to let the motor that points north vibrate! Wearing such a device seems to give some people a new sense of direction , so I was super curious to try it! In this post, I want to document how I built one, hoping to give other people who want to build…

Running my first marathon

In the spring of 2023, I ran my first marathon , the Hamburg Marathon! 🏃 This is the story of how I got there: how I started running in 2020, to how I ran 42 km (26 miles) three years later. How I got started When the Coronavirus pandemic hit in 2020, I was feeling restless and anxious, and was looking for an outlet. Running seemed like an good choice. I didn’t need a lot of equipment, and could…

How I do Weekly Projects

In the beginning of 2023, I was unhappy with my creative output. I’d often spend days on small busywork, and wouldn’t put a lot of time into creating pretty or useful things. I considered that a bug, and wanted to change it. As an artist and self-employed person, I’ve had some opportunities to experiment! I’ve found a structure that seems to work well for me: come up with small-scope projects (3-5…

Building 15-year-old software with Nix

Several people around me have been talking about Nix lately, and say that it’s cool. And because I trust those people, I decided to learn a bit about it! What is Nix? Among other things, Nix is an ecosystem of tools that you can use to build software in a reproducible way : Usually, when I try to compile a program, I need to make sure that I have all libraries and other dependencies I need, in the…

Floppiness

A chiptunes track made in Ardour in a week! I’m… not too fond of Ardour, to be honest. It had weird behaviour, crashed a couple of times, and forgot instrument setting after re-opening a project. Anyway, I made a song! :) The only instrument I used is the Helm synthesizer . Thanks to Piko, Moritz and myri for providing feedback, helping make this track better!

A tour of Oodi

There’s something really special next to Helsinki’s central station: A building called Oodi , which describes itself as “an innovative library reaching for the future”. Let’s go on a tour! The first thing I noticed was this giant screen, which explains that idle hanging out is not only allowed, but encouraged! <3 The bottom floor has a big area full of chess and go boards, and there were in fact a…

Alarm Clock Arcade

For the Ludum Dare 51 game jam, Kiki and me made another game! It’s an arcade game taking place inside an alarm clock! Inside the first digit of the seconds display, to be precise! Quick, start the alarm to wake up your human! But make sure not to be in a segment when it turns off! Play it at the Ludum Dare website! This was really fun to make – the game even has its own intro animation, and…

Making fifty TIC-80 carts in a weekend

Ever since I read about the “Make 50 of Something” technique in Vi Hart’s blog post about Fifty Fizzbuzzes , I wanted to try it for myself! Creating 50 of, well, anything, in quick succession seemed like a fun challenge! So, on a free weekend in early December, I decided to try to make 50 programs for the open-source retro fantasy console TIC-80 ! On this page, I document my experience, and…

Cat Tree Generator

I spent a one-week “mini batch” at the Recurse Center in 2021. I wanted to learn how to do 3D things in the browser, and how the wave function collapse algorithm works! What I built is a “cat tree generator”! I modelled the tiles in Blender, and wrote an algorithm that makes sure that the final structure will be consistent. For example, a ladder will only be placed if: there’s nothing over it,…

I'm (officially) blinry!

“blinry” is now printed in my official German ID documents! I want to tell you how I did it, and document this as well as I can, so that you can maybe do it, too! Specifically, it’s printed in the field “Ordens- or Künstlername/Religious name or pseudonym”, which is present both on the Personalausweis , as well as the Reisepass ! Why have it officially recognized as a pseudonym? There’s no clear…

3D-printed counter ring

This is the replica of a “knitting row counter ring” that I like. It has two rotating number rings, which you can use to set numbers from 0 to 99. Between the number rings, there is a thin, slightly bent “tension ring”, which holds the number rings in place. Print your own! I designed and tweaked the ring using a Prusa Mini+. Download the .stl file , and open it in PrusaSlicer. It seems important…
