A few blogs back I mentioned there was something happening at my work that was making me anxious. And as that continues to get closer — again, nothing serious! — I found myself convicted.
I’ve been handling the entire situation wrong. I’ve been confused, frustrated, anxious—all rolled up into one. I look at potential changes, take my eyes off the Lord, and my frustration takes me away. My anxiety flies through the roof. My confusion lies at the center of my mind. I dwell on it all and try to figure things out on my own, a direct violation of Proverbs 3:5. Nothing good happens when we use our wisdom — there’s not much there.
The situation has also tested my patience. When I know changes are coming, I want them to happen now. No need to wait. My impatience rears its ugly head and it’s all I can’t think about.
A few days ago, when we learned more information — even though said information just prolongs the process even more — I found myself incredibly frustrated. I walked back to my office in a bad mood, simply done with the situation. After I left work that day I got in the shower and realized what I’ve been doing.
I’ve been thinking about this situation as if God’s not in control. Sometimes simple things just click, even though they are things that should’ve stayed in our minds. If God is sovereign over all things — and he is — then he’s also sovereign at my work. And your work, too, whatever that is. He is in complete control of the situation at my job. (And let me stress once again the “situation” is not horrible but just leads to many questions.)
I don’t know what it will wind up like. What will it look like for me? And though it’s fine to ponder that question and even be confused about a situation, it’s not okay to forget the Lord’s sovereignty in the process. I haven’t been trusting the Lord as much as a should, but only my own intellect and understanding.
But since God’s sovereign at my job, then everything’s going to be fine. I just have to act like it. I can’t afford to figure things out on my own, not leaning on the character, nature, and wisdom of God. When I keep my eyes on him, I know everything around me will fall into place just fine.
Friend, perhaps you’re going through the same thing, or a variation of it. Just remember God’s in control of the situation. He’s sovereign at your job. But he’s not only sovereign, but sovereignly for you. The God who upholds the universe and controls all things is also your Father. We must take heart. Whenever things don’t make sense to us, God is orchestrating all things for our good and his glory.
