Repairing Books and Reading Them

Workers are in our house remodeling our primary bathroom. This paired with the summer heat and kids bouncing off the walls before school starts is absolute chaos.

I don’t do well with a messy environment and it’s a disaster over here.

I remind myself that I’ll miss these days, and do my best to embrace the time with my children at home. It works sometimes.

I get bent out of shape when my books have a creased page, scuffed spine, or a torn cover. It’s irrational, but I love these objects.

I recently considered an return of a scuffed book delivery, but made the decision to handle the repair myself.

Since then, I’ve fallen down a wormhole book repair YouTube. It’s entrancing.

During my 20 years as a hardcore comic reader I’ve been very unsuccessful at converting others to this hobby. It’s always been a frustration for me. Comic storytelling is more popular than ever, but these stories in film & TV mostly satisfies that itch for people.

Caught up on Monthly Comics

I had a three week backlog of monthly comics when I got back from North Carolina that I finally read. The first rule as a monthly comic reader is never let your unread stack get too large. My pull list is paired down a bit, but there are a lot of great comics out right now.

Finished Foundation & Empire by: Isaac Asimov

I completed book two of Asimov’s original Foundation trilogy, and dang this series is way more exciting than I was anticipating. It’s a sci-fi epic loosely modeled after the fall of the Roman Empire where a man makes a scientific prediction on how to prevent a galactic dark ages.

I started this journey because I created a sci-fi and fantasy syllabus for myself last year. Basically a reading journey visiting these genre classics. Sci-fi and fantasy seem to be massive right now in all mediums and the canon of them feels approachable because they’re mostly a product of the twentieth century. I’ll share more about this reading project in the future.

More Weight by: Ben Wickey

The last book in my project to read all the “Best Graphic Album–New” nominees for the Eisner awards. It’s a meticulously researched and constructed book about The Salem Witch Trials. I am learning a lot, but it’s slow going.

Buff Soul by: Moa Romanova

Picked it up on a whim from the library. It’s a quick read with wild candy-colored art. The story follows the author as she accompanies her musician friend, ShitKid, on a tour through LA and Austin. Really enjoying this so far!

Second Foundation by: Isaac Asimov

Time to finish the trilogy.

East of Eden by John Steinbeck

I dropped the ball hard on this one. Going to make time to really dig in.

We’re nearing the end of this season, but it’s incredible. I highly recommend this anime art-style influenced take on Supes. I think it’s one of the best modern adaptations of the character. It includes plenty of fun as Clark builds a strong crew and family around him while battling tech heavy enemies.
