Turning Data Into Story

Scientists: your colleagues might understand your graphs. The rest of us? We need a story.

If you've ever struggled to explain your work—on stage, at a family dinner, or to a skeptical seatmate on a plane—you're not alone. As a documentary filmmaker, I’ve spent years turning raw footage into compelling stories. And one simple tool I’ve leaned on again and again is what I call the 4 Cs of iconic storytelling.

I shared this at our recent Storytelling for Scientists workshop (which was packed, thoughtful, and genuinely fun), and it really landed—so I wanted to pass it along here too.

So, what are the 4 Cs?

Characters. Conflict. Clarity. Change.

Watch the short video clip below for a guide on what this can mean for your scientific communication. I’ll walk you through a framework that helps you shape any idea—whether you’re writing a grant, giving a TED-style talk, or trying to make your public health data hit home.

These are the same tools we use in documentaries to make complex stories clear, relatable, and emotionally resonant. You’ll learn how to:

• Anchor your idea in a person, not just a concept.

• Use conflict to create urgency and stakes.

• Stay clear, not vague (aka, don’t drive vague).

• Highlight meaningful change—because change is what stories are for.

And once you learn these 4 Cs, you’ll start seeing them everywhere—in science, in speeches, in great films. You’ll also start using them instinctively.
