A 4-week intensive for Black people who want to deepen their ancestral practices through close study of playing card divination this September

The 2026 Playing Card Divination Intensive is now open for enrollment! The course runs four Sundays from September 6 to September 27th, 6pm-9pm EST.

I understand that it can be hard to feel ready to step into a new spiritual skill, let alone a spiritual gift.

You may have felt curious about playing card divination for a while. The desire to read may have just fallen upon you. Perhaps you heard your call recently, or long ago.

black medicine || black magic is a Black trans written, reader supported publication. Your support sustains my work as an herbalist, rootworker, and diviner working in Hoodoo tradition. Consider becoming a founding member to keep this work possible for me.

We romanticize hearing the call. Those of us who have heard it know that hearing it is the easiest part, and it ain’t easy!

What follows isn’t romantic, but it can be beautiful.

We have to confront the obedient part of ourselves that wants to sacrifices it all to do what our ancestors ask. We have to confront the disobedient part of ourselves---the one who doesn’t believe, the one who wants to run.

We realize in the process that both parts of us must be drawn into one to continue. That the truth lies in discernment, which requires us to temper both extremes.

When it comes to authority, we must recognize that which lives in others as well as our own. This is lifelong work. This can feel like lonely work.

This is why it’s not best to do it alone.

The 2026 Playing Card Intensive is about learning a meaning of cards. It’s about learning methods, systems, and processes that make divination more authentic for you as an individual.

Yet the greatest strength of my Playing Card Intensive is the cohort.

If you are looking for serious peers with whom you may devote yourself to study. If you are looking for an experienced teacher to guide you through the cards. If you are looking to set aside time to develop your gifts--congratulations and welcome.

For four weeks we will learn how to invoke and honor our ancestral mothers. We will learn the purpose of the suits, the colors, and the numbers in the deck.

At the same time, you’ll piece together your own theories, your own understandings, your own relationship with the cards.

That’s the essence of being a reader. The more obedient you demand yourself to be, the harder intuition has to work to make it your own. The more disobedient you allow yourself to be, the less advice you have to accept, reject, or alter.

What’s in the middle of those polls? Autonomy, my friend--which is what I want for all my students.

Thanks for reading black medicine // black magic ! This post is public so feel free to share it.

I am not a “my way or the highway” kind of teacher; I’m a scientist and a systems builder. I mean this literally: I have a master’s of science in library and info sci.

I understand that knowledge is not what a teacher gives you---it’s something a class creates together. It’s something that every student draws on the work of their teachers to expand.

That’s what’s beautiful about deciding not to go it alone. That’s the beauty in finding a teacher who respects and pushes the wisdom of their students. I always strive to be that kind of teacher, and as such I always ask for my student’s honest feedback.

Here’s what they said last year:

If you’re thinking about joining the 2026 cohort of my Playing Card Divination Intensive, here’s what we’ll get into week by week:

  • week one: invoking + honoring our ancestral mothers. by right, playing cards have a strong affinity with the ancestral mothers. we’ll spend one full week exploring what it means to honor them by honoring ourselves. we’ll hone our protection practices from head to toe (and cards.) we’ll sit with our practices of offering and asking. there will be lots of space for questions and answers.

  • week two: jokers + aces. among the most difficult parts of reading is fear of change. the aces ask us to start over. the jokers surprise us in ways we can’t predict. so we’ll start with what scares many of us and work from there.

  • week three: black. black like our people. black like the mystery of the womb. black like the big bang our ancestors of lineage understood better than colonizers. black is the origin of all life on earth. if you look at the black void of space, you may suspect that black is the origin of the universe. we’ll look at what it takes to begin and sustain—the black cards.

  • week four: red. the red cards burn bright, move fast, and take action. they bring us pleasure, the consequences of pleasure, and all our emotions. they deal in luck, outcomes, and next steps. our last week together will be the final step in transforming your practice.

The price of the course is $295.00 US, and it can be broken into two installments, if needed.

You don’t have to be perfect. You don’t have to be psychic. You don’t have to have done this before. You don’t have to come from a long line of Hoodoos.

You do have to be Black, respectful, open-minded, and dedicated to learning.

If you’re a Black trans woman or a Black transfeminine person, or you took the course last year, you can take this course at no additional charge by using this link.

Send any questions over to hey@cyreejarellejohnson.com. I hope I see you in class this September!
