The racists of the 1930s, 40s, and 50s had children. Those children had children. This provocative essay examines racism as an inheritance passed through families, culture, and generations, asking why so many pretend it wasn't.

I was born from a union of two colored people who escaped the Jim Crow South, part of the Great Migration. My parents were born during the second iteration of the Ku Klux Klan between 1915 and 1945. This generation of Klansmen were reconstituted as a counter to the first Great Migration when about 1.6 million Black people left the South. The Klan was no longer just a southern thing, you couldn’t have racism confined to one region, they had to go where the niggers went. They couldn’t have them darkies up North enjoying peace and success.
