Our Last Black President

Some people will think there is a typo in the title. There is not.

Today is the grand opening of the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago. All the living former presidents are there: Bush, Clinton, Biden, and former Vice President Kamala Harris, who should have been president and would have still attended. She would have been invited.

The sitting president was not invited. Maybe that’s why he called Obama a stupid son of a bitch this week. He tried to say that’s what the Iranian leadership called him, but we know better. After the deal he just signed, who do you really think they are calling a stupid MF?

America went from hope and change to hate and retribution. What some called a political movement was really something else.

Whitelash.

President Obama said at the Democratic National Convention in 2016, “The America I know is full of courage, and optimism, and ingenuity. The America I know is decent and generous.”

Some of us may have called that gaslighting. Those of us who know we are in an abusive relationship with America. On the day of this grand opening, America is not optimistic, decent, or generous. The change we hoped for hasn’t happened. Yet. Surely Barack Obama didn’t mean this change we are experiencing now.

Today, half of America is celebrating the grand opening of a grand structure while the other half accepts the bulldozing of another.

One president feels the need for a bomb-proof bunker to protect him from numerous fake and real assassination attempts. The other is comfortable celebrating his legacy in public on a sunny day in Chicago.

One lives rent free in the other’s head. The other has to hate the fact that Barack Obama is now offering free space to the public too.

One still believes, at least publicly, in hope for all people in America and abroad.

One declared he’d bomb a whole people out of existence and would never hope for the success of people from shithole countries.

The second, if he had his way, there would never be another Black president. Barack Hussein Obama would be both the first and the last. The exception. The mistake. The thing they spent the next decade trying to correct.

The audacity of a Black man with a beautiful wife and two gorgeous daughters being the model for the nuclear family in America.

The nerve of that Black man having the ability to speak so eloquently and engage any audience, from foreign dignitaries to massive crowds, without bringing up windmills.

The boldness of a Black leader of the free world wearing a tan suit.

When Mitch McConnell vowed to make Obama a one-term, and failed, white America said son of a bitch…how can we ensure it never happens again? Let’s elect the foil, the antitheist, the opposite of Black excellence. Let’s elect a man reflective of our hate, our racism so we can say it out loud again. One that will make America white again.

Remigration.

Three wives have to be better than one, right?

So there is no typo in the title.

Barack Obama may very well be America’s last Black president.

One out of forty-seven was way too many.
