China just landed its first rocket booster on land, closing the gap on SpaceX in one afternoon.

LandSpace’s Zhuque-3 booster touched down, putting a Chinese company in the same club as SpaceX, which has been recovering boosters since 2017, and Blue Origin, which landed its first ocean stage last year. LandSpace already beat SpaceX to a methane fueled rocket. Reusability was supposed to be the moat. It is quickly becoming table stakes.

What should worry Western investors is not just the hardware. Beijing just announced the China Manned Space Agency is in charge of the national lunar program, which tells you this is not a commercial milestone Beijing stumbled into. China has embraced space as an arena of national development and geopolitical rivalry, and it is now backing that ambition with a domestic launch provider that can actually execute.

The picks and shovels question here is not whether China catches SpaceX. It is what happens to the launch cost curve, and therefore the addressable market for everything built on top of it, once two nations instead of one can iterate on reusable rockets. This changes the math for many satellite constellations, lunar infrastructure, and every downstream space company looking for an alternative launch nation. The question is whether China meets this need or is the world looking for a non-superpower to help.
