Bitcoin trades near $63,400 following a price decline below $64,000. Market participants digest macroeconomic metrics from labor and wholesale inflation reports. U.S. initial jobless claims reached 209,000, above the 203,000 estimate. The July Producer Price Index showed 0.0% month-over-month change against a 0.2% forecast, while year-over-year Core PPI met expectations at 4.2%. These economic inputs guide interest rate expectations and asset valuations while federal agencies assert jurisdiction over derivative markets.

Bitcoin began Wednesday near $64,240. Early buying pushed the price to an intraday high of $64,410. Selling pressure from algorithmic trading desks and spot market sellers moved the asset price lower throughout the August 12 session. Bitcoin broke support at $64,000 and reached a low point between $63,240 and $63,310.

Price recovery efforts on the morning of August 13 tested resistance between $63,900 and $64,010. These attempts failed to gain necessary buying volume, returning the price to $63,400 at the end of the window. This performance marks a net 24-hour loss of $800 to $850, or 1.3%. The price action converts $64,400 into an active resistance level.

Spot market data for July 2026 shows lower trading activity across major fiat channels. Total spot volume across 14 leading exchange venues fell 21.7% compared to June, dropping from $547.9 billion to $429.0 billion. Western fiat exchanges experienced volume declines: Bitfinex spot volume fell 59.7%, while Coinbase volume dropped 26.4%. Binance maintained market leadership with a 45.8% market share, processing $196.5 billion in volume. OKX and Bybit followed Binance in total volume share. High volume concentration combined with lower overall liquidity leaves spot price discovery sensitive to order flow changes.

Macroeconomic reports released on August 13 provided updated figures on wholesale inflation and U.S. employment.

Initial jobless claims for the week totaled 209,000. This figure exceeded the consensus estimate of 203,000 and increased from the prior week total of 199,000.

The July Producer Price Index demonstrated moderation in wholesale prices. Headline PPI showed zero monthly change at 0.0%, below the forecasted 0.2% increase. Annual headline PPI reached 4.7%, compared to 5.5% in the prior report and the expected 4.9%.

Core PPI, which excludes food and energy components, increased 0.2% for the month against a 0.3% consensus expectation. Annual Core PPI met market forecasts at 4.2%.

Data from fund flows indicates a contrast between Bitcoin and altcoin ETF demand. Net monthly inflows for U.S. spot XRP ETFs fell to $1 million in August 2026. This represents a 99.8% decline from the peak monthly inflow of $650 million recorded in November 2025.

The seven operating U.S. spot XRP ETFs hold 992.5 million tokens. This balance accounts for 1.5% of total circulating XRP supply. By comparison, U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs hold 6.10% of circulating Bitcoin supply. Daily trading volume for spot XRP ETFs sits at $732 million, generating less than $7 million in net daily ETF flow. The data indicates that institutional allocators treat Bitcoin as a primary reserve asset while reducing capital commitments to alternative token funds.

On August 11, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission invoked emergency powers under Section 8a(9) of the Commodity Exchange Act. The order instructs exchange operator KalshiEX LLC to maintain standard operations under federal rules.

The CFTC action responds to a July 31 lawsuit filed by New York Attorney General Letitia James. The state lawsuit sought a temporary restraining order and $36 billion in compensatory damages, alleging unlicensed gambling operations. By designating event contracts as swaps, the CFTC asserts federal preemption authority over state gaming laws to prevent order liquidation and exchange closure.

In federal legislation, Senate Majority Leader John Thune filed cloture on H.R. 3633, the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act (CLARITY Act). The action sets a procedural vote for September 15. The Senate has 14 legislative working days remaining before the October election recess. The legislation requires 60 votes to overcome a filibuster.

Disagreements over ethics provisions stalled progress. Senate Democrats request restrictions prohibiting federal officials from holding, issuing, or sponsoring digital assets. Commercial banking groups oppose provisions that allow crypto exchanges to offer yield on stablecoin deposits. Prediction markets price the probability of the bill passing in 2026 at 20%.

State actions show tighter controls on retail infrastructure. On August 11, the Murfreesboro Police Department in Tennessee checked compliance across 30 businesses to enforce Public Chapter 766 (House Bill 2505). The law, which took effect July 1, classifies the installation, operation, or hosting of a virtual currency kiosk as a Class A misdemeanor. Violations carry penalties of up to 11 months in jail and $2,500 in fines per instance.

Tennessee law enforcement cited $4.1 million in retail losses from kiosk wire fraud schemes. The Tennessee Attorney General defeated a federal court injunction attempt by kiosk operators. Tennessee joins one other state in banning crypto ATMs.

In legal actions, federal regulators filed civil charges against Goliath Ventures on August 11 regarding an alleged $397 million Ponzi scheme.

On-chain data demonstrates a shift in stablecoin usage patterns toward yield-generating assets. Robinhood Chain, an Arbitrum-based Layer-2 network, recorded 11.6 million daily transactions. Network Total Value Locked (TVL) reached $473 million, representing a 32% expansion over one week. Daily active addresses grew 3.3% in the same timeframe.

Growth on Robinhood Chain centered on Ethena USDe. Supply of USDe on the network grew from $17 million to $253 million in 30 days, comprising 43% of all stablecoins on the chain. USDe uses a delta-neutral structure, backing spot collateral (ETH and BTC) with short perpetual futures positions on centralized exchanges to generate yield.

In global settlement, MoneyGram launched its Ramps product on the Solana network on August 11. The system provides API access to MoneyGram’s network of 500,000 retail locations in 170 countries. The integration facilitates cash-to-USDC conversions, with cash deposits enabled in 25 nations. Trading application Rift completed the first integration.

In protocol management, ENS DAO tokenholders approved the “Next Era of ENS DAO” proposal on August 11. The vote transfers management of a $65 million treasury endowment to the ENS Foundation in the Cayman Islands. Board members include founder Nick Johnson and Executive Director Alexander Urbelis. Governance rules establish a nine-day timelock on treasury execution and prohibit the foundation’s 1 million operational ENS tokens from voting on governance proposals.
