“Nothing changed. Except the way you see it.”
I finally watched They Live this week.
Like many cult classics, it was a little quirky, a little over-the-top, and unmistakably a product of its era. Yet by the time the credits rolled, I understood why it has become such an enduring meme within the Bitcoin community.
It isn’t because the movie is about Bitcoin.
It isn’t.
It’s because it’s about what it feels like to wake up.
In one of the film’s most memorable scenes, the protagonist discovers an ordinary-looking pair of sunglasses. Curious, he puts them on.
Suddenly, the world changes.
Color disappears. Billboards reveal hidden commands. Advertisements no longer sell lifestyles—they issue instructions.
OBEY.
CONSUME.
CONFORM.
The city itself hasn’t changed.
Only his ability to see it.
Every Bitcoiner remembers the day they put on the glasses.
For most of our lives, the monetary system feels like the weather. It simply exists. Dollars are dollars. Inflation is unfortunate but inevitable. Central banks manage the economy. Governments spend because they have to. Debt fuels growth. Housing always goes up over the long run. Retirement means buying financial assets and hoping they appreciate faster than the currency loses value.
Nobody questions the operating system because it is the only one they’ve ever known.
Then one day, something doesn’t quite add up.
Maybe you notice your grocery bill climbing faster than your paycheck.
Maybe your savings account quietly loses purchasing power every year.
Maybe you wonder why every financial goal seems to require taking more risk.
Maybe you ask the simple question that starts so many journeys:
What is money, really?
That question is the sunglasses.
Bitcoin doesn’t force the answer upon you.
It simply invites you to ask better questions.
The deeper you go, the more you begin to notice patterns that once seemed invisible.
Why does every institution always need more money?
Why is debt treated as prosperity?
Why must everyone become an investor just to preserve purchasing power?
Why do productivity gains so rarely translate into lasting financial security?
Why do governments promise everything while deficits continue to expand?
At first these appear to be isolated problems.
Eventually you realize they’re connected.
Money sits upstream from nearly everything else.
Once you recognize the incentives created by an elastic monetary system, headlines begin to read differently.
A new spending bill isn’t just politics.
It’s monetary expansion.
An emergency stimulus package isn’t just relief.
It’s dilution.
A housing boom isn’t simply rising wealth.
It’s often a reflection of a currency measuring itself against scarce assets.
Nothing happening around you has actually changed.
Only your framework for interpreting it.
That’s what makes the metaphor so powerful.
The sunglasses don’t create a new reality.
They reveal one that was already there.
Of course, no metaphor is perfect.
Unlike the movie, there are no villains hiding behind secret disguises.
Real life is more complicated than that.
Most people working within today’s financial system are responding rationally to the incentives placed in front of them. Politicians seek reelection. Central bankers attempt to stabilize economies. Businesses optimize for quarterly performance. Families borrow because homes have become unaffordable otherwise.
The system behaves exactly as its incentives encourage it to behave.
Bitcoin simply makes those incentives easier to recognize.
And once you begin seeing incentives, you start seeing them everywhere—not just in finance, but in politics, media, education, and even your own decisions.
That may be Bitcoin’s most underappreciated gift.
People often say Bitcoin teaches economics.
I think it teaches something even more valuable.
It teaches you how to think.
It encourages first principles.
It rewards skepticism without cynicism.
It reminds you to distinguish between price and value, consumption and wealth, convenience and ownership.
Most importantly, it teaches patience.
Because once you stop viewing money as something to spend immediately and begin viewing it as stored time and energy, your relationship with the future changes.
You consume a little less.
You save a little more.
You become harder to manipulate.
You begin making decisions measured in years instead of weeks.
That transformation has very little to do with the price of Bitcoin.
It has everything to do with perspective.
People sometimes ask me when I became convinced about Bitcoin.
The truth is, conviction didn’t arrive all at once.
It accumulated.
One question led to another.
One book led to the next.
One podcast introduced another idea.
Eventually I realized I wasn’t simply learning about a new technology.
I was learning to see incentives that had been hidden in plain sight all along.
That’s why They Live continues to resonate with so many Bitcoiners decades after it was released.
Not because Bitcoin is the sunglasses.
But because everyone who has traveled down the rabbit hole remembers what it felt like to put them on for the very first time.
The world looked exactly the same.
Yet somehow...
everything was different.
